Employment for Kalmar Nyckel Crew:

Winter Deck hands:  Kalmar Nyckel, located in Wilmington, DE has three winter deck hand positions available for the 2019-2020 winter season, beginning on Thursday, November 7th and going through Saturday, April 11th.  Duties include basic ship security, monitoring ship's systems, organizing the volunteers who come to do maintenance, and overseeing the quality of their work. Caulking the deck is a big part of the winter deck hand job, and is a great skill for your resume if you’re planning a career on tall ships!  One of the three deckhands will oversee the Challenge Program trainees (3-4 at-risk teens/young adults) who work for us during the fall/winter/spring season. Experience working with teens, and some managerial experience required for the person overseeing the Challenge Program. This fall we will be doing various shipwright-led projects that the winter deck hands may be supporting, in addition to our normal maintenance tasks.  Winter deck hands receive room and board in addition to a stipend.  Send resumes to captainsharon@kalmarnyckel.org by late September.

Employment at the Copeland Maritime Center:

TITLE: Event and Visitor Services Coordinator
SUPERVISOR: Executive Director

The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation (KNF) seeks a Coordinator for its events and visitor services. Holidays, weekends, and weekday availability is required for up to 20 hours per week.

The Coordinator will ensure the operation of KNF’s visitor services and facility rentals as well as lead logistics for sponsored events such as the Wilmington Pirate Festival.   

KNF seeks applicants with strong communication skills and customer focus as well as an ability to work with people from different cultures. Applicants must be responsible, professional self-starters. Background in  event management is  preferred. The ideal candidate should have strong administrative skills  including integration of various technologies.  Personnel management experience a strong plus. 

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Manage and supervise facility rentals including:Process all paperwork and secure all KNF requirements for events; Work with client from initial inquiry through the end of the event including tours of facilities and organizing logistics; Communicate with KNF staff to ensure proper scheduling.
  • Lead logistics for KNF sponsored events such as securing permits, assessing technology needs and implementing a plan; Liaise with supporting groups (police, neighbors, parking, sponsors); Communicate with KNF staff and committees planning each event; Assist with layout, set up and breakdown of event
  • Collect data and prepare reports on operations
  • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise lobby associates
  • Manage visitor services operations: Stock brochures, oversee gift shop operation; ensure welcoming environment; Manage all payment and booking processes, including cash boxes and Point-of-Sale; Oversee conditions in museum and report on conditions as necessary. 

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Strong customer relationship and communication skills with diverse audiences
  • Responsible, professional, and adaptable to changing conditions
  • Works well as part of a team and independently
  • Very Strong computer skills and technological ability; Adept at Google and Microsoft products, social media, and Point-of-Sale software; ability to troubleshoot problems
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Compliance with criminal background check
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds

 TITLE: Fort Christina Park Guide

SUPERVISOR: Park Interpreter

Primary Objectives: Guides will open/close and staff the park from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend.  He/she will provide information and educational programs for individuals and groups for the community and visitors to the area. 

Responsibilities and Duties:

·     Greet guests on site; share history and answer questions about Fort Christina Park and the 7th Street Peninsula;

·     Develop and present interpretive programs to the community and visitors;

·     Promote park visits on social media and coordinate with KNF Marketing for additional communication vehicles;  

·     Provide group tours;

·     Tidy park and street in front of park at the beginning and end of the day;

·     Lock and secure Park, tent and materials

        Minimum Qualifications:

  •     Strong visitor relationship and communication skills with an ability to work with        different ages and people from different cultures;
  •      Responsible and professional;
  •      Self-starter and quick to learn
  •      Strong interest in Wilmington’s history – colonial history; industrial history of           Wilmington’s Riverfront and Fort Christina Park;
  •      Sense of Humor a plus!
  •      Compliance with criminal background check.
